To express interest please complete form here
The visit aims to provide participants with a unique visit to Japan to gain insight into Japanese mathematics education with a special focus on mathematics education for all. Asks the question: what does inclusive mathematics education look like in Japan?
We will explore the roles that lesson study has in supporting:
· collaborative teacher learning,
· improving students’ school experience
· learning of mathematics for all students.
There will be opportunities to find out about
· teaching through problem solving
· curriculum coherence and progression
· curriculum development involving school - university research groups
We will observe and discuss a number of lesson study research lessons of different types and non- lesson study maths lessons
Participants will have an opportunity to attend four online sessions prior to visiting Japan where they can learn about what they will experience as well as about the practicalities of the trip (8, 14, 20 and 27 January 16:00 – 17:15).
Our preliminary schedule requires you to arrive in Japan on or before 13th February 2026 and our last session will be held at a a school on 21st Feb. We expect the fee for participating to be around £300 – this is primarily associated with simultaneous translation costs, headset hire and small fees for attending some large-scale lesson study events. You will be required to pay for flights, accommodation, meals etc. from your own sources. We will block book accommodation in a simple hotel in a suitable location but you will need to settle the bill for your room yourself. There is the possibility that we will relocate to Osaka for part of the trip.
There will be an online information session provisionally planned for 5pm Wednesday 30th November. Details will be available at: https://www.collaborative-lesson-research.uk/events
